The purchase of two vintage dollies brought not only a bit of cheer one September afternoon, but a surprise as well. Hiding under the cloak of a simple pipe-cleaner doll was a wee felt basket containing a Mercury dime from 1944!

It is a very simple basket…and an enormous amount of money for one little doll. The Wiregrass Hitties and Mad for the Farthing Crowd thought, they too, could make use of such handy little conveyance and contrived to make a pattern.

An intriguing surprise in a very small package…what a story there might be!

A bit of felt from a thrifted Pendleton skirt, scraps of embroidery thread from past projects and a few beads made the perfect little basket to carry the “sixpence” from Grandmother’s bridal shoe.

Three or four days of genuine Winter had caused modest consternation in the garden. The Lavender and the Pineberries had relocated to the front porch, where the brick wall, soaking up sun during the afternoon, could then release the necessary warmth during the frigid nights. In the evening, the pots and boxes were gently tucked in, every care being taken to secure their safety until the temperature had risen in the morning to above freezing.

The Pineberries appeared to have enjoyed all the attention. They began producing fat berries, flourishing as the weather warmed. Hitty Hedydd thought it prudent to document this fruity phenomenon before the Mockingbirds, never ones to miss an opportunity, took advantage of this January surprise.

Hitty Taffenous spent a shivery afternoon at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, enjoying Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap”, the longest running play in the history of London’s West End. She was grateful for having friends close when the lights blinked out and *gasp* murder was done!
